School and viruses.......
If we'd have had this Coronavirus outbreak when we were at School,I suspect we'd have all been wiped out within a week!
If cleanliness and hand-washing is the key to survival then we'd have all been doomed and social distancing was unheard of.
We'd often share a bottle of Tizer and a bag of crisps and if you missed out on a crisp you'd definitely get some when it was your turn for a swig out of the bottle!
Not many people had running hot water and we'd have a bath once a week and if you were last in the bath you'd come out grubbier than when you went in and washing in between wasn't high on our list of priorities, nor was changing our clothes.
We used to hope that if the Nurse was doing a feet inspection it'd be on a Monday as we'd be slightly cleaner than if it happened on a Friday.
Most of us had pretty permanent coughs and colds and tissues didn't exist,or if they did, none of us at school had ever seen one and you'd be really lucky to have a clean hanky to go to school with and if you did you'd have run out of dry bits before you even got to assembly. So most of us were coughing and sneezing and sleeves were the 'hanky' of necessity and nobody much cared who they coughed and sneezed over.
I doubt many kids ever washed their hands after using the toilets as those blobs of dirty looking carbolic soap on the wash-basins were, almost, the same shape when we left school as when we started.
The only time we used it was when we were marched in by a Teacher who watched while we ACTUALLY washed our hands.
We DID used to wipe our hands on those continuous towel-machines they had in the cloak-room though, that is until it stopped on the last sheet which ended up black, wet, bloodied and snot-sticky and was avoided by all but the hardy until the van came around with a new towel and which probably had enough germs on it to now wipe out a whole country.
School.....best days of your life............
